Why Am I An Editor?

Welcome to my first blog!

As 2026 begins, I decided to try to reach audiences in a different way. While posting on social media is one avenue, and indeed quite fun to do, I thought I’d go back to my roots and write a little bit. So, blogging it is! In these posts, my goal will be to write about editing, publishing, and writing to the best of my knowledge and pull from my experiences in the industry so far. With that, I’d like to start off by introducing myself (again) to the world.
My name is Rebecca, and I started Rebecca’s Edits so I could continue working and collaborating with authors who want an extra pair of eyes on their work. My interest in editing started in undergrad, while I was in a creative writing program focusing on short fiction. As I was  working with my peers on their pieces, I was able to speak with them about what they believed their story meant and bounced around ideas about plot devices, characters, and the worlds they created. I was able to fall in love with storytelling all over again.
I then decided to enroll in a Master’s program for Book Publishing, and from there, I have interned at different publishers and events to get to know the world a bit more. I’ve been on acquisitions teams, editorial teams, marketing and publicity teams all  with the goal to create a wider experience and knowledge set to start my own freelance business. However in all of the different roles I’ve been part of, I have to say that developmental editing is by far the most fulfilling and creative.
I thrive on new stories, new worlds, new characters, and different takes on tropes and plot devices. Digging into what makes a story work, such as finding that one thread on your investigation board that connects everything, is incredibly satisfying to me. But, the invigorating part is giving the author your thoughts and having them validate with the words “that is exactly what I meant!”.
I’ve always believed you need to at least like what you do to make it worthwhile, but I love stories and peeling back the layers of them. Developmental editing takes time and effort, and it’s definitely a subjective job, so I approach it with a reader’s heart and a writer’s mind. So if you are an author looking for my services, I am here to help your story, your world come to life.
